If it is May, it must be Minnesota. It is becoming an annual event to visit my independent telco friends in this most northern continental U.S. State in the month of May. On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to speak to and learn from independent telcos at the Minnesota Telecom Association’s Video Symposium in St. Cloud, MN. On Wednesday, diversiCOM, one of the leading independent telco content producers, is graciously hosting the Local Content Workshop. More on these events in the next issue. Because of the travel and preparation for these two events, this issue will be a bit shorter than normal.

IMS Opportunities, Markets, and Potential Roadblocks

In our last article on IMS and Push to Talk over Cellular we provided several scenarios for IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) deployments and highlighted the interoperability challenges faced by IMS applications. In this article, we dig deeper and drill down into the real opportunities and potential markets for IMS. We also identify problem areas that need to be resolved rather quickly for IMS to be a commercial success, notably security. Fresh insight on this topic was obtained at the May 14-17 Communications Developer Conference where several participants offered opinions.

The $40 Triple Play Bundle

Viodi View reader, Nicolas Bry of French T-Online subsidiary Club-Internet, wrote this excellent article on how France has jumped ahead in terms of creating an environment where triple play competition is seemingly thriving. He has some good screenshots of his company’s service offering as well as some interesting statistics on what consumers from IPTV systems of the 21 st century. This important to watch, if for no other reason, than it sets a potential path for T-Mobile, Club-Internet’s U.S. corporate cousin. Click here to read his blog.

Corrections to Last Issue

In the last issue of the Viodi View, VASST was incorrectly identified as the producer of transitions and effects. NewBlueFX is the producer and VASST is the distributor of these editing add-on packages.

People on the Move

Many of you may remember Emmett Smith from E/O Networks, NLC and other telecom endeavors. Emmett has created a series of web sites regarding online marketing and sales. In his newsletter, he points out the importance of face-to-face communications as a complement to a web presence.

Viodi View reader John O’Donnell, former CTO of MPEG-4 chipmaker Equator, commented that people in the broadcast world had suggested to him that, “If it’s our bit, you must transmit.” He made this comment in reference to the article, Could MPEG-4 Transcoding Be Outlawed. John is now involved in a somewhat high-profile venture that is looking at delivering solar power at price competitive with fossil fired power.

The Korner - Memorial Day Tribute

One of the more unusual displays at NAB was from a group call Operation Interdependence. Their goal is to provide every service man or woman, in each platoon or fighting unit with quart size baggies that contain everyday items, as well as personal notes. This group provides a more efficient way for people at home to support our troops, by making the shipping process much more efficient as compared to individual shipments.

Finally, Viodi a Local Content Workshop Alumnus produced a video of a tree-dedication ceremony for fallen soldiers and one that is appropriate as we remember those who have sacrificed for us this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
