Video Tidbits from Minnesota

By Roger Bindl, roger.bind@viodi.com

MTA kicked off its annual convention in video fashion this year with a trip to iMax. The attendees were treated to a 3D NASCAR movie. The discussion following reviewed similarities with telecom… the high tech, marketing, competition, family values, risks, and especially the changing rules and regulations.

Scenes from MTA

Vaonet caught my attention with equipment for a small telco NOC center. In today’s world of equipment with interfaces for alarm monitoring, testing, configuring, updating software and such, the Vaonet equipment becomes an element manager and portal for monitoring the monitors.

Badger Communications pulled me into their booth with a VoIP service offering. Badger is a distributor for the UNASAT VoIP services. Unasat is a relatively new organization, but it has deep telco roots. It is offering telcos the ability to offer voice over IP and integrated data solutions over terrestrial and/or satellite links. They supply all of the components necessary for the two-way satellite link, in addition to providing network support and monitoring. This could be a very effective way for a telco to offer communications services in remote areas or on a national basis.

TVN is advancing the deployment of VOD. TVN is discontinuing PPV video and moving to VOD movies. This is forcing telco’s to migrate to VOD servers. Word is that this will lead to a number of announcements from server vendors regarding new deployments by telcos.

The MTA "VOD: Marketing and Deploying the Triple Play" breakout made me
realize that VOD needs a facelift. This migration by TVN from a PPV to a VOD offering is a big deal, but equally important is the path telcos are taking toward local
content development.

Ron Laqua and Tim Owens provided an entertaining session on "Gadgets and Gizmos - What's That Do?" They reviewed a list of the top 11 things they thought were neat. Tim was fascinated by the iPOD, Ron was fascinated with DVD re-winder. Tim was fascinated with wireless base station that replaces land line, but uses wiring at the NID; Ron fascinated us with story of childhood where he used fascinate in a sentence, "His sister had a dress with 10 buttons, but had gained weight and could only fascinate."
